Job Title:          Lab Manager

Department:     Laboratory

Reports To:      Engineering Manager


The Lab Manager is responsible for the oversight and direction of the lab function to provide timely, efficient testing results of product and material compliance with specifications and standards and managing the staff including scheduling, work assignment, training and development.

Essential Functions:

  • Direct the development, implementation, and maintenance of testing protocols in accordance with recognized testing methodologies such as ASTM, UOP, IP and EPA to meet applicable requirements and operational needs of the refinery.
  • Establish alternative procedures for critical lab analysis in event of equipment failure or other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Develop and maintain Kern Test Report forms and product specifications.
  • Oversee the proper handling of chemical waste from the lab.
  • Oversee the maintenance and operation of equipment and instrumentation
  • Provide analytical support for refinery operations, with scheduled and requested analysis, to maintain proper quality of unit products
  • Provide analytical support for Engineering (Technical Service) problem solving
  • Provide support for Supply and Distribution (Commercial Group) to control raw materials, intermediates, and ensure quality of finished products, including retaining samples for future analysis verification.
  • Assure communication of accurate results to proper refinery departments
  • Manage laboratory staff, initiate selection, promotion and corrective actions when appropriate; accountable for fair and uniform application of Kern policies and procedures.
  • Assign work and oversee work product.  Create work schedule for coverage in all necessary positions on all applicable shifts. 

Minimum Education and Qualifications: 

  • Four-year degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in an industrial lab environment with supervisory responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to create and foster a team environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency with laboratory software and instrumentation
  • Demonstrated strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Comprehend and demonstrate application of utilizing standardized testing methodologies, such as ASTM, UOP, IP and EPA, to create testing protocol
  • Must be willing to work extended hours when needed, including nights and weekends


  • Prior work experience in a refinery or closely related lab setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work with all chemical, petrochemical, and petroleum products.
